Passionate giving for compassionate care
The H. Phelps Potter Society was founded to honor Dr. H. Phelps Potter’s vision of combining true compassion with leading-edge care. Dr. Potter’s vision became his legacy and remains a Paoli Hospital hallmark. This is what draws families to come here in their time of need. It is what attracts the very best doctors and nurses to build their careers with us. It is what earns us numerous awards and recognition for the quality of our care, year after year.
It is also why H. Phelps Potter Society members choose to make Paoli Hospital a priority in their giving.
Meet Our Donors
Over the past 25 years, these generous donors have helped to build a strong foundation for the hospital with their shared commitment to high-quality healthcare close to home.
In 1995, when Steve Aichele was a Township Supervisor in Tredyffrin and a law partner at Saul Ewing, he was recruited by Peggy Ewing to join the Paoli Hospital Foundation Board. He remembers it as an exciting time of enormous growth. Paoli had joined Main Line Health just prior to his joining the board, and they undertook the merger with Thomas Jefferson Health System during his initial years. This launched a respected career of volunteer leadership that led to Steve’s eventual Chairmanship of Main Line Health’s Board of Trustees, a position which he held until 2018.
Peggy Ewing recalls being fascinated by the planning that went into the move to Paoli in 1968. She was fully aware of the growth in the Great Valley and the housing development in Chester County, especially to the west. How would this change and growth impact Paoli Hospital? She was invited to join the Paoli Hospital Board where she served on the Development Committee and became the Chair of the Community Services Committee. Just this year Peggy celebrated her 90th birthday (pictured here). She remains impressed with how Paoli Hospital continues to adapt to the needs of the community state-of-the-art facilities extending further west to Collegeville and Exton
Through the years Mary Jane Matson and her husband Cliff had a variety of medical needs met by Paoli Hospital, always experiencing care that was personal and special – like being part of a family. This was demonstrated especially during Cliff’s last days spent in the hospital. Mary Jane remembers that all the staff, in addition to meeting all his needs, extended their comfort to her as well. Each year, Mary Jane donates with gratitude for their physicians and caring hospital staff. Since Cliff worked for General Electric, many of their gifts to Paoli are matched.
Bob Riley was first asked to join the Planned Giving Committee in the early 1980’s, when Paoli Memorial Hospital was still a small community hospital and the board was an operating board. As the founder of a financial planning firm that specializes in helping clients manage their resources and plan for the future, it was a perfect fit for the young executive. As Bob reflects on his more than 30 years serving Paoli, he feels great pride and attributes our success to the strength and collegiality of the people who, like him, care about our community’s wellbeing.
