Eat Well, Be Well Program—Philanthropy in action
Bryn Mawr Hospital (BMH) is proud to share that, thanks to donor support, the Eat Well, Be Well food bag distribution program is combating patient food insecurity. This need was first brought to our attention through Main Line Health's annual Health Care Disparities Colloquium, which identifies disparities in our healthcare processes and practices as they might exist – unknown to us – within our health system. Clinicians presenting on this topic noted: "a prescription for antibiotics will not keep a patient healthy if there is no food at home." The goal of the program is to address short term food insecurity among our under-resourced Emergency Department (ED) patients, which can potentially lead to improved patient experience, reduced health care costs, and decreased avoidable ED visits.
Recently, ED staff discovered that a 65-year old patient with kidney disease did not have secure, consistent access to food. Previously, the patient had suffered from three strokes and had poor circulation as a result. The patient shared that her husband has heart disease and suffers from kidney disease as well. Neither are able to work and their food stamp benefits were decreased to $19 per month. Thanks to donors like you, our ED staff were able to offer a food package that helped them eat nutritiously in the short term, and, during a follow-up consultation, the patient was added to a produce distribution program coordinated by Lankenau Medical Center's Deaver Wellness Farm. We are pleased to share that the patient is now receiving fresh vegetables regularly, something she has not eaten since she was a little girl.
The Eat Well, Be Well program will serve approximately 470 BMH patients per year and will hopefully be rolled out to other units across the Hospital. If you would like more information on this program or are interested in supporting it, please contact Lynn Keily at KeilyL@mlhs.org or 484.337.8177.

Charitable gift annuities: Protecting your future while helping others
A charitable gift annuity represents a creative way to support Bryn Mawr Hospital while also boosting your retirement income.
How it works
With a charitable gift annuity, you make a donation using cash, marketable securities, or other assets, and Bryn Mawr Hospital, in turn, pays you and/or another beneficiary a fixed income for life. This type of gift can provide the security of reliable, predictable payments that continue until the end of your lifetime and also provides an immediate partial income tax deduction for your contribution, which may enable you to itemize your deductions.
Now is a good time to support Bryn Mawr Hospital through a charitable gift annuity because payout rates for new gift annuities increased on July 1, 2022. The exact amount of the annuity payout depends on the age or ages of the annuitants. The new recommended one-life gift annuity rates start at 4.8% for donors age 65 and are capped at 9.1% for those who are age 90 or older.
As an example:
Joan, 72, transfers $25,000 to Bryn Mawr Hospital in exchange for a charitable gift annuity.
With the old rates: Joan would have received annual payments of $1,225, based on a payout rate of 4.9 percent.
With the new rates: Joan receives annual payments of $1,375, based on the new payout rate of 5.5 percent for a 72-year old.

These annuity rate increases, along with an improvement in the charitable deduction due to increases in the IRS discount rate, make gift annuities an attractive gift vehicle for friends of Bryn Mawr Hospital who wish to support our mission while receiving steady payments for life.
