Dee Adams Center for Integrative and Regenerative Medicine opens at Bryn Mawr Hospital

On March 13, 2021, Bryn Mawr Hospital (BMH) held a small celebration to dedicate the recently opened Dee Adams Center for Integrative and Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). John Schwarz, BMH President, opened the event by acknowledging the large role his predecessor, Andi Gilbert, played in bringing the project to life. John shared that the Dee Adams CIRM “likely wouldn’t have come this far without Andi’s commitment and persistence and Dee & Nick’s incredible gift which came at a critical time for the project’s momentum and further development.”

Though few in number, the enthusiastic group that gathered for this ceremonial “ribbon-cutting,” in recognition of Dee and Nick Adams $2 million contribution, included members of the Adams family as well as key stakeholders from Bryn Mawr Hospital past and present. This has been a passion project for Dee Adams, a pivotal partner in establishing the center. Dee noted:

“I’ve been working with Main Line Health to envision an integrative care system that focuses on continuity of care, expanding access to alternative therapies, and thoughtfully engaging patients in their healing process. I am so thrilled that this vision has become a reality, and that the Dee Adams Center for Integrative and Regenerative Medicine has opened its doors. By partnering with expert healthcare practitioners across the Main Line Health system, we have created a truly unique experience that centers a person’s mind, body, and spirit.”

The Dee Adams CIRM will set a new bar for integrative, primary and concierge medicine at Main Line Health and in the region. Cutting-edge programs and services are planned for the months and years ahead under the direction of Medical Director, Dr. Sara Slattery. The Dee Adams CIRM currently offers:

  • Functional dietary and nutrition counseling
  • Acupuncture and Chinese medicine
  • Massage therapy
  • Fitness and metabolic testing
  • Personal training
  • IV micronutrient infusion therapy
  • NovoTHOR whole body light therapy – a therapy bed that uses red and near-infrared light to treat injuries, reduce pain, relax muscles/joints, increase blood circulation and more
  • Vasper – a revolutionary health and fitness technology that combines compression, cooling and interval training to help the body restore, harmonize and reach peak vitality
  • Mindfulness and meditation
  • Yoga

Generous support from several other BMH friends helped to ensure the launch of this new and innovative center, including Jeff and Janine Yass, Frank and Mollie Slattery, the Women’s Board of BMH, the Ingersoll Family and Valentina Kanter.

Getting to know new Bryn Mawr Hospital President, John Schwarz

Andrea F. Gilbert honored with tribute plaque at Bryn Mawr Hospital

Former Bryn Mawr Hospital (BMH) President Andrea F. "Andi" Gilbert and her husband, Bruce, returned to campus on March 22, 2021 to join Jack Lynch, President and CEO of Main Line Health, and John Schwarz, current BMH President, for the unveiling of a permanent installation celebrating her legacy. Andi served as President from June 2000 to January 2021, and under her leadership, the hospital experienced significant growth, achieving national recognition for clinical quality and patient experience. With profound commitments to safety, quality, equity, employee and medical staff engagement, affordability and innovation as defining qualities of her presidency, Andi led always with a spirit of warmth, integrity and compassion.

Upon her retirement, Bryn Mawr Hospital – through the generosity of charitable donors – established The Andi Gilbert Patient Experience Fund. This endowed fund supports in perpetuity the hospital's many initiatives and programs that help provide a superior patient and family experience by enhancing the comfort and well-being of those we are privileged to serve. In addition to The Andi Gilbert Patient Experience Fund, donors also supported the Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit renovation and the Dee Adams Center for Integrative and Regenerative Medicine at Bryn Mawr Hospital in honor of Andi Gilbert. In all, $2.5 million was contributed to these programs and the tribute plaque also honors the more than 125 donors who chose to recognize Andi Gilbert's leadership in this deeply meaningful way.

BMH Patient Assistance Fund: Ensuring under- and uninsured patients have access to equitable and safe healthcare

Bryn Mawr Hospital (BMH) is a non-profit organization and, as part of our mission to care for the health of the community, provides outreach to support vulnerable patients in our service area who may not be able to afford necessary care after hospitalization. The Patient Assistance Fund is a philanthropic source that provides financial assistance for the non-MLH expenses that patients encounter when transitioning to the next phase of their treatment beyond the hospital walls. Typically, qualifying patients are identified through case management, social workers, or financial counselors. Last summer, a request for financial aid was made on behalf of a 39-year-old homeless patient who required additional support following his discharge. Thanks to this fund, BMH secured space for him at a local respite facility where he received the assistance he needed. More recently, the hospital was able to help two uninsured patients receive outpatient dialysis, a treatment that would not have been possible otherwise.

Surprisingly, in Bryn Mawr alone, 20.4% of the population live at or below the poverty level, according to a recent report by the United Way. BMH provides charity care (including free/discounted Main Line Health expenses) above and beyond the minimum requirement of a non-profit healthcare entity. However, there is also significant need to assist uninsured and under-insured patients as they prepare for discharge. This often life-changing fund provides financial support for patients and families in a variety of ways, offsetting expenses associated with prescriptions, patient equipment, nursing care, transportation to appointments, homecare, short-term placement in facilities, clothing, food and cremation services. The Patient Assistance Fund ensures that all patients receive the care they need to experience a positive outcome upon leaving the hospital.

We are so appreciative of our benefactors, Lyn and Harry Groome, for establishing the Patient Assistance Fund at BMH. Through their generosity, BMH is able to make sure all individuals in our community can access the healthcare they need, regardless of their financial situation.
