At Mirmont Treatment Center we support real-life heroes—those who put themselves in stressful, high-risk situations every day. In the face of tragedy and trauma, emergency responders must develop an uncommon resiliency. Through our VIPER program, we support emergency responders and veterans who are struggling with these concerns. Our program helps them recover and learn to effectively balance work and daily life.
What we have found is that family members and those in direct relationship with emergency responders and veterans are often overlooked when it comes to the effects of being exposed to their loved one’s trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.
People in relationship with someone experiencing symptoms of trauma, may themselves develop symptoms, such as:
- Codependency
- Mood instability
- Heightened stress
Loving someone in this field often presents issues that require and deserve support. Which is why we have introduced a support group specifically for the family members and loved ones of emergency responders and veterans.
LOTUS stands for "Loving Others That Are Under the Shield". This is held by our family services coordinator, Mary Cosgrove, and it is open to the public. It is a safe and confidential space to connect with other people who understand what it's sometimes like to be in relationship with a police officer, firefighter, paramedic, or anyone who is regularly exposed to traumatic events.
We provide a platform where you can share your experiences, which often include:
- Getting through communication barriers
- Learning how to open up and process feelings
- Discovering ways to support yourself and those you love
This group is here to respond to your needs and provide education and resources to help. We welcome anyone interested in being a part of this network of support. You deserve help, too!
