Main Line Health is now offering the unique opportunity to current nursing students to gain valuable, hands-on clinical experience while having the flexibility to manage their school and personal life. We are offering part time, year-round paid positions on all shifts in most clinical specialties. This is an exceptional opportunity to prepare for the clinical setting after graduation.

Our Nurse Extern Program is designed for anyone currently enrolled in a nursing program. You will have the opportunity to work as a patient care technician on one of our acute care units and gain hands on experience assisting nurses in patient care. Typical responsibilities include AM care, PM care, EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, finger sticks, phlebotomy and more!

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited RN or BSN program
  • Ability to meet a 16 hour per month commitment once training is completed
    • Unit-based hours requirement: 24 hours per week commitment during the summer (June/July/August) and 16 hours per month during the fall and spring semesters.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights and weekend (Saturday and Sunday) shifts

  • What are the requirements to be eligible to apply?

    Enrollment in an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program.

  • What clinical areas are available?

    Externs are hired into various clinical areas depending on open positions and may be able to pick up shifts in other units.

  • What are the hours/shifts available?

    The most common shifts for nurse externs are evening shifts (3:00–11:30 pm), night shifts (11:00 pm–7:30 am), and weekend shifts (Saturday and Sunday). Nurse externs who start in May work 48 hours bi-weekly, including every other weekend during the summer, with the option of picking up additional hours. After returning to school, externs work “as needed” throughout the school year.

  • When can I start working?

    If offered a position, nurse externs can start their employment either during a standard 1 week, day shift orientation or an accelerated weekend orientation. All onboarding and pre-employment requirements such as a health screen, background check and professional references must be completed before starting employment.

  • What is the orientation like?

    Each extern will complete four days of virtual and classroom training and a day and a half of Main Line Health orientation. Externs will then begin an orientation on the unit with a preceptor. Externs work with their manager, educator and preceptor to determine a clinical orientation schedule.
