Paoli Hospital Invests in Comprehensive Stroke Care with Opening of State-of-the-Art Neurointervention Lab

Paoli Hospital February 21, 2023 News Releases

The opening of the lab marks a shift into a new era of treating complex neurological diseases by bringing leading neurointervention care to Chester County.

Paoli Hospital, part of Main Line Health, has opened a new, state-of-the-art Neurointervention Lab that offers the most advanced diagnostics and treatment available for patients experiencing stroke. In collaboration with Jefferson Health Neurosurgery and Tele-Neurocritical Care Services, the lab will bring leading neurointervention care to Chester County.

The meticulously designed space includes dedicated procedure suites and well-appointed patient areas for pre- and post-procedure care. Features include the most advanced imaging equipment available to guide neurointerventional procedures, unparalleled amenities to ensure patient comfort and a collaborative environment where a dedicated team of specialists skilled in treating complex neurological conditions can interact with ease.

“Paoli Hospital is one of few community hospitals offering this level of advanced neurointervention care. We are proud to offer these comprehensive services across our continuum of care and excited for what this means for our patients, ensuring they achieve the best possible outcome if they experience a stroke,” said Jim Paradis, President of Paoli Hospital.

The opening of the lab marks a shift into a new era of treating complex neurological diseases. Paoli Hospital will have the capability to perform a myriad of complex procedures to care for neurovascular issues, including ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, aneurysms and vascular malformations.

Advanced technologies, such as Viz.Al, allow the multidisciplinary stroke teams to evaluate, coordinate and expedite lifesaving care thanks to software connected to scanning equipment that uses artificial intelligence to detect a clot.

“As a nationally recognized Primary Stroke Center certified hospital by The Joint Commission, Paoli Hospital ensures patients in need of time-sensitive treatment for stroke receive comprehensive care that is focused on delivering the best possible clinical outcomes,” said Michelle J. Smith, MD, FAANS, System Chief of Neurosurgery at Main Line Health and Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Neurological Surgery, Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience, Jefferson Health.

The expansion of stroke care services at Main Line Health underscores a commitment to provide best-in-class care for the treatment of stroke. The neurointervention teams at Paoli Hospital and Bryn Mawr Hospital — nationally recognized by The Joint Commission as a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center — will continue to partner to provide the latest in neurodiagnostics and treatments for the communities we serve.

Patients also have access to the full complement of neurosurgery and neurointervention services offered at Jefferson Health. Care coordination ensures that patients who go to Jefferson Health for specific services have a seamless experience and access to specialists in neurology, neurosurgery, comprehensive neurovascular care and neurorehabilitation.

And for patients needing specialized care after a stroke, Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital — one of the most comprehensive rehabilitation facilities in the Mid-Atlantic — is there to support their recovery so they can get back to living life to its fullest.

“Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the U.S., and timely treatment is the difference maker. Now, we'll be able to provide lifesaving and lifechanging stroke treatment within minutes of diagnosis. Offering these services at Paoli Hospital will have an enormous impact on patient outcomes,” said Sumeet Multani, MD, Director of Neurointervention Services at Paoli Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University.
