Lankenau Medical Center: Our 340B story
About Lankenau Medical Center
Part of Main Line Health since 1985, Lankenau Medical Center has been devoted to the health and well-being of the community since 1860, with a founding mission to serve all those in need. Its continued dedication to eliminating disparities in care within the communities it serves and providing compassionate, high-quality care to all, make Lankenau a preferred destination for patients throughout and far beyond the Philadelphia region.
Bordering both Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, Lankenau serves the healthiest and least healthy counties in Pennsylvania, respectively. Serving as a safety-net hospital caring for patients regardless of their ability to pay, Lankenau has received both regional and national recognition for its excellence in providing state-of-the-art, quality care, including being named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by IBM Watson Health™ in 2020.
Lankenau is recognized as a national leader in advancing new options to diagnose and treat illness, protect against disease and save lives. Located on a 93-acre campus just outside of Philadelphia, Lankenau is a 389-bed, not-for-profit teaching hospital that includes one of the nation’s leading cardiovascular centers; the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, one of the few freestanding hospital-associated research centers in the nation; and the Annenberg Conference Center for Medical Education, that trains over 100 new physicians each year through nationally ranked residency and fellowship programs. Included in the full spectrum of services provided at Lankenau is a level II trauma center, further enhancing the ability of EMS providers to rapidly transport trauma victims, helping to save the lives of community members.
340B: A federal program supporting safety-net providers
Savings realized through participation in the 340B program supports Lankenau Medical Center’s ability to provide services to under- and uninsured patients, regardless of their ability to pay, and to address health care needs in our community. The core 340B program helps Lankenau Medical Center offset expenses associated with the care of underserved patients who seek treatment for a wide range of complicated diseases. Rural referral centers, similar to Disproportionate Share Hospitals (DSH), serve a significantly disproportionate number of low-income patients and receive payments from the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services to help cover their costs of providing care to this patient population.
Benefits of the 340B Program at Lankenau Medical Center
The 340B Program affords patients the high-quality care they deserve, no matter their income level or insurance coverage. The cost savings from reduced drug pricing represent a key factor in the continuum of patient care, enabling hospitals and health systems to provide an array of needed treatments and services. The 340B program offers best pricing on pharmaceutical products to help ensure that under- and uninsured patients can access these medications at our facility. Any revenue generated by our 340B program will be reinvested into the hospital and the outpatient areas that provide care to these patients and to provide the necessary staffing to support their health needs.
Impacts if 340B is scaled back
Scaling back the 340B Program would jeopardize Lankenau Medical Center’s ability to offer all the services mentioned above to our patients.
